“BURNS NIGHT”
CELEBRATIONS IN PAEROA TRUE SCOTTISH TRADITION The Paeroa and District Caledonian Society celebrated the anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns in true Scottish traditional style on January 25 in the Civic Hall. The evening was ably conducted by the chief of the society, Mr D. Murdoch. The Selkirk grace was said by Mr D. Murdoch, the address to the haggis was given by Mr Gibson, and toast to the immortal memory of Robert Burns was proposed by Pipe-Major R. Robertson, who gave a most inspiring address; Other toasts honoured were “The King/’ proposed by Mr D. Murdoch; “Scotland,” by Mr N. G. McLeod 1 ; “Paeroa Caledonians,” by Chief Stewart of Hamilton, replied to by Mr W. Pirie; “Paeroa Borough,” by Mr M. Thomas, replied to by His Worship the Mayor; “R.S.A.” by Mr A. Ryan, response by Mr T. Gregson; “Kindred Societies,” by Mr C. Pryor, replied to by the representatives of the Hamilton, Morrinsville, Matamata, Te Aroha and Tauranga Caledonian Societies and Mr >E. Edwards, presi-
dent of the R.S.A. The ladies were toasted by Mr J .Beveridge. The artists were proposed by Mr J. Mearns and Mr J. Reid. An excellent programme consisting of songs, “Scots Wha Hae,” and f slail Caledonia,” by Mrs N. Good; “Star O’ Robbie Burns,” and “There Was A Lad,” by Mr W. Miller; “Afton Water,” “Ye Banks and Braes,” and “Doon The Burn,” by Mrs Woodward; “Duncan Gray,” and “The Border Ballad,” by Mr E. Smith; violin and piano duets by Mr and Mrs A. Kay and national dance by Mr D. Bothwell was thoroughly enjoyed by the some 120 guests who attended to pay tribute to the immortal memory of Scotland’s national bard, Robbie Burns.
