NINE MAKOS CAUGHT

FISHERMEN FROM THE BAY

RIGHT AMONG THE BIG FISH Excellent fishing was enjoyed by parties on three launches from Mercury Bay, fishing off Red Mercury Island last Wednesday when nine mako sharks ranging in weight from 2201 b. to 3141 b. were caught. Mr R. Dale and his son Mr Guy Dale, accompanied by Mr and Mrs Ken Meyers, of Auckland and Mr Bruce Steedman of were out in Mr Robin Smith’s launch while a party of five Mercury Bay residents, Messrs Jack Jackman, Charlie Simpson, Sonny White, Eric Prestage and A. W. Collins (Hamilton), were fishing from Mr Roly Smith’s boat. Mr H. Re’es, accompanied by two friends was also fishing from his own launch. The first launch caught two fish, the second four and the third three. The launches reported that they were right amongst the big fish and that in addition to the nine good fish landed a further five were hooked but lost. The day’s catch is considered to be one of the best on record. Particularly good fising among the makos has been enjoyed by fishermen out from Mercury Bay this year. The fish were taken to Whitianga and weighed there by members of the local Deep Sea Fishing Club.
