ONE EXCHANGE
TELEPHONES ON THE, PLAINS QUESTION OF THE RENTALS “I have to inform you that so far as l the furnishing of our estimate regarding the cost of establishing a central .telephone exchange at Ngatea is concerned such an estimate would be furnished only after an engineering survey was undertaken,” wrote the chief postmaster, Thames 'Post Office, to the November meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council in reply to the council’s request for information regarding the cost to individual subscribers if such a charge was made. “This would involve a considerable amount of work and in view of the existing shortage of engineering staff and the fact that there is no immediate prospect of establishing a central' exchange at Ngatea, the departi.. 3nu is not in a position to furnish the information you desire,” added the letter.
The Ngatea Progress Association wrote to the council supporting their application for a central telephone exchange and urged that the charge basis be a flat rate over the whole area.
The clerk, Mr E. A. Mahoney, said the telephone rentals would be almost double if a central telephone exchange, was established. He quoted cctads of rentals which had been supplied by the department.
