DRIVERS’ LICENCES
RETURNED SERVICEMEN
QUESTION OF RE-TESTING
The question of the issue of drivers’'licences to returned servicemen came up at the November meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council, when a letter on the subject was received from the Commissioner of Transport Mr G. L. Laurenson, Wellington. The letter stated that the-re-testing of drivers who had allowed their licences to lapse by three months or more should now be carried) out, but it was felt that some consideration should be given to the position of returned servicemen who had) recently been demobilised. The responsibility for the issue of a driver’s) licence remained with the issuing authority.
The county clerk (Mr A. A. Jenkmson) considered that the requirement of a further test-if the licence was not renewed at the end of the threemonthly period' was rather a - strange one, as a licence might be renewed by a person who was not driving a car regularly at all, whereas a person who w’as driving regularly, but happened to overlook the necessity for the quarterly renewal, would, be obliged to undergo a repetition of the driving tests.
The letter was received and action in the matter was referred to the county clerk.
