THE CHASTISEMENT

i OF OUR PEACE

WAS UPON HIM

(By

W.G.B.)

On the first day of Christ’s public ministry, John Baptist said of Him “Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world'.” On the last ddy of iHis life this saying was fulfilled. ,

It was the Jewish preparation of the Passover, or the dlay on which the Passover Lamb was killed, and great numbers of Jews were in Jerusalem for the feast. On that day, the Lord Jesus was taken into the handls of men, His creatures, and He was crucified. His blood was shed, and. His life was given. He became 4 *The Lamb of God,” fulfilling in Himself all the meaning of the Old Testament sacrifices. The Jewish crowd first took the Lordi before their own rulers, the High Priest, and the Council of the Jews. They mocked Him, smote Him, and spat on Him. Jesus was impassive and refused to reply to their mockery and questionings. “As a sheep 'before her shearers is dumb, so opened He not His mouth.” But when the High Priest adjured Him by the Living God' to say whether He was the Christ the Son of God, He said plainly that'He was. ' -

The Jews then sentenced Him to death, and sent Him bound to Pilate, the Roman Governor, who alone had power to execute a sentence of death.

Pilate, to please the Jews, delivered the Lord to the Roman soldiery to be scourged and crucified. The whole band of soldiers was called together, and Jesus was stipped naked and beaten until the blood flowed. He was crowned with thorns and the soldiers mocked Him, smote Him and spat upon Him, as the Jews, had done.

Finally He was Ibd away to be crucified!, bearing His Cross. .

“But He was wounded for our' transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him and with His stripes we are healed.”—iP.B.A.
