SLIGHT DECREASE
POPULATION OF COUNTY 370 LESS THAN IN 1936 2265 PEOPLE ON PENINSULA A decrease of 370 in population in the Coromandel county since 1936 is shown in the census figures recently taken. The total population to-day is 2265 compared with 2635 in 1936. The Coromandel township shows a population drop of 131. Its present population is 570. In 1936 it was 701. The Whitianga riding, including the township of Whitianga, has shown a slight decrease in the Coromandel county figures, its present population being 443, whereas in 1936 it was 447. On the other hand, the Whenuakite riding has increased, being now 260, against 222. A small increase is also shown for the Whangapoua - Kuaotunu ridings, with a present combined' total of 17'2, against 131 for the last census'. The Colville riding now has a total population of 272 and the Coromandel riding of 7'86. The Maori population of the Peninsula is 465.
