WAR GRATUITIES

METHOD OF PAYMENT QUESTION BY MR SUTHERLAND “The details of the war gratuity proposals are being worked out and should be announced at an early date,” stated the Minister of Finance ((Mr Nash) in the House of Representatives to-day, answering an urgent question by Mr A. S. Sutherland (National —Hauraki). Mr Nash said the proposed arrangements would be in accord with the statement in the Budget and would provide for the payments to be invested and spread over a short period of years.

On application of servicemen, special consideration would also be given to allocation of any of the grants made for the purchase of farms, businesses, homes, furniture, and the like, and for the repayment of loans raised by servicemen for those purposes.

Mr Sutherland said that many service personnel were being discharged from the forces and 1 were contemplating building and furnishing homes, buying farms and businesses. The early payment of the gratuity would assist ex-servicemen in making their financial arrangements.
