THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY. “Public Service.” FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1945. WELFARE OF MOTHERS
New Zealand has established a reputation for the valuable work which voluntary organisations supported by public subscriptions, have done and are doing for the welfare of mothers and infants. In keeping with this reputation and in recognition of the need for more intensive research and study in matters relating to maternity, a group of professional and business men, backed by many national women’s organisation, has launched an appeal for funds to found a Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in New Zealand. The chair will be located in the post-graduate school attached to the Auckland Hospital for Women, and the professor appointed will direct lectures and research in these matters. There is at present no scope in the Dominion. for the specialised training in obstetrics' of post-grad-uate medical students, and an effort is now being made to meet this need. It is anticipated that £lOO,OOO will be required to endow the chair, and already £20,000 has been subscribed by Auckland business houses. The appeal for funds is being conducted on a nation-wide basis, and it is confidently expected that it will receive the same degree of support which has been accorded similar progressive moves which have been made in the’past for the welfare of mothers and children. A committee has already been set up in Paeroa to assist this project and public support will no doubt be readily forthcoming.
