PLANTING OF TREES
COUNTY COUNCIL REPORT 'HILLS ARIOUNID THAMES “My Chamber will be grateful for any assistance your council can give in this matter,” said a letter from the Thames Chamber of Commerce received at the last meeting of the Thames County Council, in asking for support in its proposals for the afforestation of the hills round Thames, on almost wholly poor land from the Tararu Creek to the Kauaeranga River. “As a matter of fact, the County Council was agitating before the war for these areas to be planted in trees,” said Cr. E. J. McLoughlin. “As soon as things settle down we can get on wit’ll it. “Our attitude is that areas unsuitable for farming for all time should be planted as soon as possible, as an asset and to assist in keeping down weeds,” said the chairman, Cr. D. Courtney. “It is up to us to draw the attention of the Government to it as soon as conditions become more normal, and when more men come back from overseas to try to get something done about it,” said Or. McLoughlin, who added that such planting was needed in various areas over the whole peninsula. The council agreed that it would be “We want the chamber to understand that we have been at this before the war,” said Or. McLoughlin.
