TPR. I. BROPHY IN HOSPITAL

PRISONER’S TRYING ORDEAL

In a letter to Mr and Mrs F. Brophy of Mercury Bay, Dvr. John McMahon states; that he drove the ambulance which conveyed their son, Tpr. Irwin 'Brophy to hospital after he was wounded'.

Dvr. McMahon states that Tpr. Brophy was cheerful after the long, rough trip of 42 miles along a dusty road heavy with traffic. No news so far has been received of the progress of Tpr. Brophy. Mrs Donovan, of Whanuakite, has received 1 letters from Italy, dictated by her son, Lieut. Bill Donovan and written by a friend. He was* still on the seriously ill list but cheerful and brave, assuring her medical advice was satisfactory. Pte. Len Brott recently released from a prisoner-of-war camp in Germany, wrote to Mr and Mrs Sewell from hospital in England. He said he had only just made it in a long, terrible march, taking three months, too weak and ill to beg or steal. He stated that he had a very rough time and could hardly believe his wonderful good luck to be in England where the treatment and comforts were marvellous.

Pte. Fred Baker, recently wounded in Italy, wrote to Mrs R. Sewell to say he was making good progress after ibeing wounded) in a leg. Pte. Baker was a very popular member of the staff of the Whitianga Post Office prior to joining the forces 1 .
