THAMES BOARD’S DECISION
A decision to collaborate with other hoards interested in having an inde-
pendent tuberculosis sanatorium set up in the South Auckland area was made at a meeting of the, Thames Hospital Board on Tuesday. In his report to the board. Dr. E. Gifford, medical superintendent at Thames, supported the need for -i mw sanatorium. "The need is considerable
and I advise you to join other boards
to try to get some action in the near future." said Dr. Gifford.
Reporting on a conference of interested hoards, held to discuss this matter. at which Thames was represented, Mr J. W. Danby, deputy-cairman, said that the demand for admission to the existing North Island sanatoria had increased to such an extent iip't boards could not hope for the early ad mission of patients. The demands .at the boards controlling the samnerm were already sufficient to fill the two present institutions. Others jus; had to wait and it might mean a veyv ,'on? wait. He referred to the large number of cases in the Auckland area, many at present not in sanatoria. It was proposed that the new building would cost £250,000 and would house 150 patients. A Serious Problem Mr Danby said that in the Auckland, Waikato, Thames, Tauranga, Bay of Plenty and Opotiki hospital districts there were 1734 notified cases of tuberculosis, including 1227 Europeans and 503 natives.
