DEBT-FREE MONEY
LETTER TO COUNTY COUNCIL OPINION OF THE CHAIRMAN A letter, supported by a file of documents relating to debt-free money, was received from Mr H. A. Hatnilton, secretary of the Social Credit Group at the November meeting of the Coromandel County Council. The letter stated that the council’s resolution not to support the Bay of Islands County Council in its efforts to secure debt-free money had been noted. The pamphlets enclosed were all bearing on matters relating to the question and he asked the council to peruse and study them with the idea of supporting the Bay of Islands County resolution. The chairman, Mr E. Deeble, gave it as his opinion that the councillors, being elected as representatives of the ratepayers to administer the Counties Act and other Acts and regulations, it was beyond the scope of the local body to express an opinion on this matter. As individuals it was another matter and everyone could support or not the idea as they saw ■ fit.
Cr. T. E. Simpson disagreed with the chairman’s views and said that if the council thought it was in the interests of the ratepayers to agitate as a council, it should do so.
Cr. A. Watkins supported Cr. Simpson in his remarks. It was finally proposed by the chairman and seconded by Cr. A. Watkins that the correspondence be placed on the table for the information of all concerned.—Carried.
