ALL RESTRICTED

EMPLOYMENT OF LABOUR ADDITIONAL COVERAGE TOWNS IN THE THAMES VALLEY I Speaking to a Gazette representative to-day, the District Manpower Officer, Mr R. W. Chappell, drew attention to the recent gazetting of Employment Restriction Order No. 5 which will become operative on November 16. Under this order the towns of Coromandel, Thames, Te Aroha and Waihi are added to the existing coverage. This action has (been considered desirable in view of the fact that, whereas towns of a similar size ’(including Paeroa)' are already covered, no restriction has previously been imposed on the towns now enumerated in connection with the engagement of labour. ■ ■ Must Obtain Consent Briefly stated, the effect of the new order will be that any person or firm at any of the towns now included, must obtain the prior consent of the District Manpower Officer (before engaging a worker for any type of employment. This condition applies to firms and undertakings whether gazetted. essential or otherwise and a special form of application to engage (N.S. 144) is available at the Manpower Office. Classes Exempted There are a few classes of employment exempt from the restriction and these are, in the main, farming, mar-, ket-gardening, nursing, coal raining, etc. Particular attention is drawn to the fact that any employment of labour as stated herein, without the prior consent of the District Manpower Officer, is an offence under the emergency regulations and in the event of any breach, a prosecution will be lodged forthwith.

All Terminations

Mr Chappell also pointed out that in terms of Regulation 30 of the Industrial Manpower Emergency Regulations, 1944, all terminations of employment in undertakings in respect of which consent to engage labour is required (i.e., all undertakings subject to any restriction of employment order) must be notified to the appropriate manpower officer, within 24 hours of the termination. Wherever possible, however, the termination should be notified in advance. A form for this purpose (N.S. 203) is also available at (he manpower office.
