PIPIROA BRIDGE

DISCUSSION BY FARMERS WAITAKARURU MEETING NEED FOR THE CONSTRUCTION Discussion on several matters took place at the July meeting of the Waitakaruru branch of the Farmers Union, the main topics being the desirability of compulsory unionism of farmers and the I’ipiroa Bridge. The secretary, Mr D. W. Barker, reported that, the Waitakaruru branch now had 50 financial members. It was felt, however, that all farmers should become members and- by this means strengthen the position of the farmer. After discussing the reported possibility of the earlier construction of the Pipiroa Bridge, it was resolved to communicate with the clerk of the Ilauraki Plains County Council asking for further particulars with the view of enabling members to become conversant with, the steps which had been taken. Members were unanimous in supporting the. need for the construction of the bridge at the earliest possible date, jis it was felt, that the penalty of ferry charges to the Waitakaruru and Kopuarahi residents should be removed as soon as. possible. The Farmers' Union at Waitakaruru was resolved to do all in its power Io support any steps taken for the putting forward of the work on this im■’portant road link. Mr N. W. Hedges presided over a fair attendance. At the conclusion of the meeting supper was served.
