PICNIC RACE MEETING INTERESTING DAY’S SPORT £lOO FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS Although a high wind which later turned to heavy rain kept a large number of people away from the Paeioa Picnic Racing Club’s Patriotic Race Meeting held on the Paeroa Racecourse on Saturday the function was successful and interesting sport was provided for the crowd which braved the elements. As a result of the day the 1'944' All Purposes 'Patriotic Appeal will benefit by approximately £lOO. Excellent organisation by the president and secretary, Messrs V. Young and K. Dean respectively resulted in a lengthy programme of events being run off in good time without a dull period during the day. Mr L. Sloane as clerk of the course carried out his duties to the satisfaction of all. Messrs C. W. Winder and P. Corbett were the judges for the day while the starting was attended to by Messrs W. Crimmins, A. Coxhead and J. Thrupp. Messrs G. Wyborn and L. Sloane were the judges, for the hunting events while Mr R. Green judged the steer riding competition. The announcer, Mr M. T. Bailey with the aid of the Reliable 'Radio Service’s loud speaker kept the public fully informed regarding results. The Morrinsville Pipe Band was in attendance, having marched from the Paeroa Railway Station to the Post Office and then out to the. course. •Exhibition dances organised by the Paeroa Caledonian Society were given, the programme for this section comprising a band selection, highland reel, sean truibhas, Irish jig, band selection, Irish hornpipe and sailors’ hornpipe. ? Members of the Paeroa Ladies Patriotic Committee provided refreshments throughout the day which were particularly welcome as. a result of the unpleasant conditions which ruled. As a result of their effort the takings for the day were considerably augmented. Although placed last on the programme the steer riding competition proved particularly interesting. Heavy rain which fell while this event was in progress made conditions very unpleasant but some very good exhibitions were given. During the afternoon the president of the club, Mr V. Ypung thanked all for the support they had given the function, expressing his disappointment in the weather. He thanked the Te Aroha Picnic Racing Club for their kindness in loaning their colours for the day and Mr F. Bancroft for the use of his steers for the steer riding competition. He also thanked the members of the committee for the way in which they had worked. His Worship the Mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards, speaking as chairman of the Paeroa District Patriotic Committee thanked Messrs V. Young, E. P. Fathers and K. Dean and their committee for organising the function in an effort to raise funds for patriotic purposes. He also thanked the Morrinsville Pipe Band for attending the function, the Ohinemuri Jockey Club for the use of the course and the public for their support.
