SOUND COUNTY INVESTMENT HAURAKI PLAINS QUARRY That a profit of £757 Ils 10d had been made by the Mangatarata quarry during the year ended March 31, 1944 was disclosed by the county clerk, Mr E. A. Mahoney, in a profit and loss statement presented to the April meeting of the Haura'ki Plains 'County Council. 'Sales of metal totalled £7415 9s 3d for the year as under:—County roads £6397 5s (hl, Lands Department £5O Is Od, Main Highways Board £467 10s Od, (Public Works Department £2l, cash sales £479' 13s 3d. Expenditure had totalled £6657 17s sd, including £3'087 IBs 4d for cartage, £1569 15s 3d for quarrying, £36 for insurance, £327 12s 7d for crushing, £261 0s Id for spreading, £598 2s lid for maintenance, £172 8s 6d ■for power, £24 2s Od for telephones and machinery inspection, £22 for bad debts, with allowances of £285 8s 0d for depreciation and £285 .8s for renewal reserve. The clerk explained that the ratepayers had actually saved more tha* shown as the metal for the roads had been secured at a much lower price than metal could have (been purchased elsewhere.
