Morrison and S. Wheeler. The headmaster, Mr A. E. Day, was also in attendance. Apologies for absence were received from Mrs S. Wheeler and Mr R. L. Darley.
The question of .the health and living conditions of Maori residents living within the borough was again discussed when dealing with the. reply received from the Paeroa Borough Council to the committee’s request for an inspection of these dwellings. It was finally resolved to. defer any further'action pending a report from the health inspector as suggested by the council. '
Uaumont-British Machine
The sub-committee set up at last meeting to deal with the school sound projector proposal reported that after enquiries had been made concerning the performance and suitability of a Gaumont-British machine, an order had been placed with the Auckland provincial agehts for one of these projectors, delivery of which may be expected within the next six months. Negotiations concerning a suitable projector and efforts made by the committee, Parents’ Association and scholars to raise funds for the purchase of a machine have been carried on for some considerable time and general satisfaction was' expressed that the projector had now been ordered. It was also decided to purchase a film strip projector which is complimentary to the sound projector and is of undoubted value in this form of visual education. Advise was received that the Auckland Education Board had called tenders for the erection of the additional classroom at the High School. The committee had spared no effort over the past three and a-half years to have this room erected and the present satisfactory stage has been reached due in no small measure to the efforts of the member for Thames, Mr J. Thorn. It was resolved to forward Mr Thorn a letter of thanks and appreciation for his untiring work in this connection.
Paths At High School
The visiting committee reported that the concreting of the footpaths at the High School had been completed and greatly improved the general appearance of the school grounds.
The headmaster’s report disclosed the rolls for the primary and secondary schools at 441 and 82 respectively, the average attendance being 371 and 80. Considerable sickness prevailed in the primary school. The Education Board’s architect notified that 70 old type desks will shortly be replaced by the latest, type of desks. A fresh supply of 400' library books had been received from the Country Library Service.
Accounts totalling £29 7s 4d were passed for payment.
