ALLIES’ VICTORY

CELEBRATIONS IN PAEROA PUBLIC MEETING CALLED PARADE TO BE HELD SATURDAY Arrangements for the celebration of the Allies’ victory over Italy will be discussed at a special meeting to be held in the Paeroa Borough Chambers at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 14. The following telegram on this subject has been received by the Mayor of Paeroa, Mr Edwin Edwards from the Rt. Hon. the Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser. The telegram reads as under:— “May I refer to my public statement over the air last night and in the press to-day with respect to the celebration of Italy’s Capitulation by national parades throughout New Zealand, September 18, to symbolise New Zealand’s part in the whole war effort. “Until now during this wai* ceremonial parades have predominantly been concerned with the armed services, but I feel that the time has arrived \vhen the people should have an opportunity of seeing, wherever practicable, the Dominion’s total war effort on parade. I am, therefore, asking the Mayor, as head of the district, to co-operate in this matter with the Government and with representatives of the organisations of employers, manufacturers, farmers and workers in war industries.

“For that purpose I should be glad if you could see your way clear to act as chairman and convenor of a genera] committee to arrange and carry out a general parade at 10' a.m. on that date. Heads of armed services and appropriate Government departments have been instructed and employers ' and manufacturers’ associations 1 and trade unions have been requested to make contact with you. “Even in districts where it may be impracticable to have representations of armed services it is hoped that it will be possible to arrange parades that will otherwise represent New Zealand’s war effort. In some cases it ipake be that a parade in one centre representative of a number of adjoining local authority districts will be the only practicable proposal and may I suggest that if this is the case so far as you are concerned you will combine with the appropriate adjoining district. I should be glad of telegraphed information at your earliest regarding your willingness to co-oper-ate in this national effort.”

In accordance with the above request the Mayor has convened a meeting of all persons interested to be held in the Borough Chambers, Paeroa, on Tuesday, September 14, at 7 p.m. Army and Home Guard officers and personnel, Returned 1 Association members, school teachers, W.W.S.A. members, Fire Brigade members and employers’ and employees’ representatives are invited to attend. ..
