SERVICE WEDDING

SPENCE—ROBERTSON BRIDE IN VICTORIAN GOWN A pretty wedding was celebrated on Saturday, August 28, at 6 p.m., at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church, Remuera, when Gertrude Lamont Kynoch Robertson became the wife of iSec.-Lieut. J. R. Spence, M.B.E. This was the culmination of a romance starting some years ago before Miss Robertson left New Zealand for Australia. When the ship which brought the troops returning on furlough, called in at Australia, Lieut. Spence cabled Miss Robertson who took steps to obtain permission to fly to New Zealand. This was granted and as soon as she arrived, arrangements were made for the marriage.

The bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Robertson, of Banff, Scotland, but her brother who resides in Howick, Auckland, gave her away. The bridegroom who lived in Paeroa for about a year is the son of Mr C. Spence, of Bradford, England, and the nephew of Mrs W. Wallace, Waitakaruru, with whom he has lived since a boy.

The gown worn by the bride was of pale parchment taffeta backed satin, styled in mid-Victorian manner, which suited her petite figure. She wore a lace veil, and carried a trailing bouquet of freesias and lilies of the valley.

The bridesmaid, who was Miss Elsie Eady of Orakei, Auckland, wore a frock of powder blue organdie, cut on similar lines to the dress of the bride, her bouquet being of daffodils and forget-me-nots, her headdress' being composed of the same flowers.

The best man was Lieut. S. Abel, M.M., a comrade of the bridegroom’s who is on sick leave after being wounded during the Middle East campaign.

Mrs Robertson wore a black marocain ensemble with black hat, and carried a posy of pink stocks, whilst Mrs Wallace wore navy, with a cerise hat, and a posy of red cyclamens.

After the ceremony, a reception was held in the Domain iKiosk, where over 50 guests assembled, amongst whom were several of the friends of Lt. Spence also home on furlough.
