PAEROA HARRIERS

FOWLER BEATS VUGLAR SHARP’S FORM IMPROVED I OVER CHAMPIONSHIP COURSE On Saturday last the members of the Paeroa Harrier Club held a run, over the proposed Waikato CrossCountry Championship course, commencing from the Paeroa Domain Grandstand. 'Three packs were formed, a slow Colts’ led by L. Wheeler, a fast Colts’ led by R. Millar and a racing pack. A fast pace was maintained by the slow Colts and good form was shown by L. Wheeler, M. Follas and P. Morrison who filled first, second and third places respectively. A newcomer in D. Scott ran a good race and will improve with another run or two. In the Fast Colts A. Currie and S. Wheeler were the outstanding runners and they had a good race to the finish with only one. yard separating them. Other runners to show good form were M. Millar, A. Vosper and R. Millar. In view of the forthcoming Waikato Cross-Country Championships on July 31 the Racing Pack ran over the proposed championship course of 61 miles. From the start F. Sharp went to the front and set a stiff pace which was maintained throughout the fii-miles journey. With one mile covered F. Sharp and M. Wallan were in front followed by J. Fowler and M. Vuglar. After three miles had been travelled F. Sharp was still bowling along nicely in front followed by Fowler, Vuglar and Wallan. Wallan at this stage was feeling the effects of a heavy cold which prevented him from participating in the teams race last week.

With one mile to go Fowler and Vuglar went to the front closely followed by Sharp with Wallan, who was beginning to tire, about 20 yards further back. Fowler and Vuglar went very fast at this stage and opened up a big break on the rest of the field. Fowler just hung on long enough to get the judge’s decision by one yard from Vuglar. Although Sharp finished very resolutely he was unable to bridge the gap and had to be content with third place. F. Sharp ran his best race to date and showed a glimpse of the form which won him the Ellerslie Club Championship away back in 1940. Results:— Slow Colts.—L. Wheeler 1, M. Follas 2, P. Morrison 3. Fast -Colts.—A. Currie 1, S. Wheeler 2, R. Millar 3. Racing pack.—J. Fowler, M. Vuglar, F. Sharp. Next week the club will hold their senior and junior handicap race commencing from the Domain grandstand.
