WHITIANGA FAREWELL

THREE SOLDIERS HONOURED PRESENTATION FROM DISTRICT A district farewell in the form of a public dance was held in Whitianga on Monday. The three guests of honour were Cpl. I. Brophy, Pte. J. Davis and Pte. Rushton. Mrs Rose supplied the music, extras were given by Mrs Mathieson and Mr A. Lee. Mr Hemmings proved a popular M.C. and performed his duties with his usual enthusiasm. Hearty acclamation greeted the appearance of the three lads in uniform during the interval arranged for the presentations. The secretary of the • Whitianga Patriotic Committee, Mr Pooley, said that it was his honour to wish the three boys farewell and paid special tribute to Mr and Mrs F. Brophy, mentioning that -Cpl. I. Brophy was following a family tradition. Mr Pooley asked for the support of the district when “Tunisia Day” would be celebrated. Mr H. Simpson was then called upon to make the presentations to the lads and heartily endorsed all that Mr Pooley had said about the Brophy family. A gift was also given to each lad on behalf of the “Busy Bees.” Cpl. I. Brophy, Pte. J. Davis and Pte. Rushton responded suitably, after which dancing was resumed and the M.C., Mr Hemmings announced “The Hungry Dance.” Winners of the evening’s Monte

Carlo waltzes were Miss I. Hamilton and E. Leßage; Miss M. Simpson and Cpl. I. Brophy. During the evening Pte. J. Davis and V. Garson gave solos.
