FIRE IN CASH SAWMILL .LITTLE DAMAGE DONE NGATEA FOOTBALL CLUB BALL (From the Hauraki Plains Gazette of June 16, 1923) An incipient fire broke out in the Paeroa Cash Sawmills shortly after 6.30 last evening. Mr W. Hall, who was passing by the mill at the time, promptly advised the proprietor, Mi’ R. Phillips, whose residence is near the mill. With . the assistance of Messrs V. Carrick and R. Wells, the flames were quickly subdued by means of a hose which is installed for fire-fighting purposes. The fire originated in the frame-work surrounding one of the 'boilers. Fortunately little damage was done. Mr Phillips carries no fire insurance on the mill or plant. Despite the unfavourable weather conditions on Wednesday evening, the plain and fancy drgss masquerade ball, organised by the Ngatea Football Club, was a success. About 50 couples were present, including many from Thames. The hall was tastefully decorated, the floor was in good order, and the music 'by Williams’ Orchestra was excellent. The dance was kept going with a swing, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Extras were played by Miss Appleby, Miss Luke and Mrs Potter. The winners of the waltzing competition were Miss Furness and Mr Garrick.
