BURDEN ON RATEPAYERS INCREASES IN LEVIES PROTEST BY COUNTY COUNCIL Exception to a farther increase in the hospital rate levy of over 13 per* cent, was taken at the monthly meeting of the Ohinemui’i County Council on Wednesday, when a comparative statement showing that the rate had increased from .231 d in the £ for the year 1932-33 to .539 d for the current financial year was presented. The actual levy ’on the county Tor the year 1932-33 was £704 12s 2d, compared with £2316 Is to-day, an increase of more than 200 per cent.

Cr. J. J. Shallue moved, and Cr. T. A. Barrett seconded, that the council record, an emphatic protest against a further increase of more than 13 per cept. in the hospital valuation rate and request the chairman to inform the Government that it considers such an increase indicates failure to hold farmers’ costs as promised by the Prime Minister under the scheme for economic stabilisation. . The chairman, Mr W. Marshall, said there was no suggestion that the Hospital Board had been in any way extravagant, but the council did say that the cost of hospital maintenance continued to be an ever-increasing burden on property owners, and that such maintenance should be a greater charge on national funds rather than on the pockets of the ratepayers. No reflection on the management of the board was intended, but the present policy in regard to the upkeep of hospitals necessitated increasing demands on the man on the land. The motion was carried unanimously, with the addition of the following clause: “ . . and .that this resolution is not a criticism of the Hospital Board, but a protest against a policy which results in an ever-increasing charge on ratepayers.”
