IRISH COMEDY
“LITTLE NELLIE KELLY” PROGRAMME AT REGENT FULL OF LAUGHS AND BLARNEY 5 “Little Nellie Kelly,” starring Judy Garland, George Murphy, Charles Winninger, Douglas McPhail, will show at the Regent Theatre on Tuesday and Wednesday. It’s a great day for the Irish—arid it’s a great day for you, too! You’ll meet the Dooleys and the Noonans, the Kellys and the Fogartys— in George M. Cohen’s lilting Irish comedy that’s packed with laughs and blarney! You’ll soon be hearing' “Nellie Kelly, I Love You,” “It’s a Great Day for the Irish,” “Singing in the Rain,” “Pretty Girl Milking Her Cow” and all your other favourite Irish ballads—sung in that Judy Garland style.
It’s the brightest Irish comedy since “The Cohens and the Kellys.” Inspired by the musical offering of George M. Cohen, the 1 picture offers several surprises besides its rich, warm Irish wit and sentiment. The main point is that it marks Judy Garland’s advance to maturity, by casting her in the dual role of mother and daughter. George Murphy plays husband and father to Judy’s dual assignment, and on such a-double level is natural and appealing. Much of the humour and humanity exuding from the story’s script comes from the rollicking “rambunctious” characterisation of Charles Winninger as Nellie’s grandfather. Douglas McPhail s fine baritone voice and young appearance accommodates Miss Garland to perfection in several musical and romantic interludes.
FINALLY TO-NIGHT
