NOT PRACTICAL
USE OF TRACTION ENGINE FARMS TO THE RAILWAY CONSERVATION OF RUBBER A proposal to utilise traction engine haulage from farms to the nearest railway station was not thought practical by members of the Ohinemuri County Council at Wednesday’s meeting. The engineer of the Public Works Department, Paeroa, Mr M. J. Thomas, wrote to the council on the subject as under:—
“The Commissioner of Transport has advised that in the hope of conserving tyres, a proposal is mooted to utilise traction engine haulage from farms to nearest railway stations. This certainly will be more applicable in Canterbury than in other areas. “I would appreciate hearing your views of the possible effect of such transport on your roads. Will you please advise me at your earliest so that I may forward the opinion of all bodies in this area at one and the same time.”
After some discussion the chairman Mr W. Marshall moved that the local engineer, Public Works Department, be advised that it is the opinion of the council that it is unlikely that there would be much practical use in this county for haulage by traction engines and also there was the problem of so many small bridges in the county that would not stand the loading.
