TOO MUCH DUST

MOTORISTS AND TROOPS REQUEST FROM COLONEL DON’T DRIVE AT A FAST SPEED “I should be extremely grateful if you could give publicity to the matter of motorists speeding past troops on the road,” remarked the commanding officer

to a representative of the Matamata Record who had looked in t at a nearby camp* Sr “Very many drivers are most considerate and slacken speed when they pass the troops,” continued the Colonel, “but there are others who are not so thoughtful. They seem to think that so long as the troops are at the side of the road it is all right to rush by at top. speed, or at a fast speed; but I can tell you it is no joke. 'Lorry drivers especially are apt to make a great dust, and you can imagine just what it is like, say, if the troops are sitting down having a meal and lorries or cars rush past raising great clouds of dust which smother everything. Even if they are not eating it is bad enough. I can tell you they have just been lugging mortars and things up on the hills, and it is jolly hard 1 work. When they rest for a - spell naturally they are hot and ‘sweaty,’ and to have clouds of dust blow all over you is not too nice. I have had to place a limit of 10' miles per hour in the camp for the same reason, and if you could mention the matter we would be very grateful.” The pressman promised to do his best.
