PROMISED THE EARTH
FORTUNATELY, BUT A DREAM
MR F. W. DOIDGE GETS A LAUGH
“For me my garde nis ever a sanctuary—only those who are caught up in the hurly burly of politics can best appreciate a garden as a sanctuary,” declared Mr F. W. Doidge, M..P. for Tauranga, when officially opening the Tauranga flower show.
“Yet I am bound to confess that one cannot always escape politics even in a garden,” he added. “For instance, a morning or two ago I fell asleep in the sunshine on my lawn. I dreamed that I was present at a conference to discuss the terms on which peace should follow the war.
“Mussolini was there. He thundered: ‘The Almighty promised me half the earth.’
“Hitler was there. He boasted: ‘The Almighty promised me all the earth.’
“Walter Nash was there. He shouted: ‘I did nothing of the kind.’ “Fortunately it was but a dream,” concluded Mr Doidge amid laughter.
