MANY NEW WEEDS
GROWTH IN PLAINS DRAINS THEY HOLD UP THE WATER FOOD FOR THE WILD DUCKS “ There is a lot of growth of strange types of woods in the drains at present and they certainly hold up the water,” reported the clerk, Mr J. E. Green, to Thursday’s meeting of the
Netherton Drainage Board. Mr W. -H. Cheale stated that he had seen a new kind of duck weed in the drains which he had been told had been introduced by the acclimatisation societies for the ducks.
“If this is correct it is a very serious matter,” added Mr Cheale. He explained that drainage boards would have a big problem to deal with in the future and all the new weeds which were being introduced would to this difficulty.
Discussion then took place on the Poa Aquatiea weed, members giving instances of men and even a man and a horse being able to float on a patch of weed. This weed would be a big problem in the years which lay ahead.
