THAMES PROTEST

TAURANGA AGITATION CHIEF POST OFFICE VENUE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MOVE The rumour that there is a move in Tauranga to have the Chief Post Office removed from Thames to that centre was referred to at a meeting of the Thames Chamber of Commerce last week. The member for the district, Mr J. Thorn, wrote the council saying he had noticed a paragraph in the Thames Star referring to the agitation to have the chief post office removed from Thames to Tauranga. Mr Thorn stated that he would do all he could to stop such a movement.

“It would be a great favour if your chamber could assist me in any way possible to make an effective approach to the Postmaster-General,” wrote Mr Thorn. The secretary then read the following paragraph from a Tauranga paper: “A suggestion that the Tauranga Chamber of Commerce should continue to press to have the chief post office for the district situated here (Tauranga) was made at the last meeting of the chamber. It was stated by the president that a deputation from the Tauranga Borough -Council, had approached the authorities .on the question while in Wellington, but apparently nothing had been done. It was decided that the question should be left in the hands of the Hon. B. C. Robbins and Mr F. Doidge, MJP., to raise with the Postmaster-General on a suitable occasion.” The paper was dated August 8.

-Mr W. A. ’Sawyer, for the benefit of the council, explained the area covered by the Thames district, also the comparison between the Thames and Tauranga post offices. Mr A. Danby was of the opinion that the council should back. Mr

Thorn in his efforts in this matter. It was moved by Mr Danby and seconded by -Mr J. H. Ensor, that a

letter be sent to the Postmaster- , General, protesting and explaining wessons for such a protest. Also,

that a copy of the letter be sent to Mr Thorn. The motion was carried.
