STEEP INCREASE

HIGHER HOSPITAL RATE SOCIAL DISEASE PROBLEM PIAKO COUNTY CONCERNED “It appears that there must be a very steep increase in hospital rates as a result of the steps 'being taken by the Government to combat the incidence of social disease,” commented Cr. J. M. Stewart at Monday’s meeting of the Piako County Council when it was reported that the proposed conference of delegates of the New Zealand Counties’ Association had been postponed for the duration of the war. Cr. Stewart, who is also a member of the Waikato 'Hospital Board, stated that the board was required to spend £lOOO on a social disease clinic and £20,000 immediately it was able to get on with the job, and' thus he suggested that the council should contact adjacent counties to ascertain their views. This suggestion was adopted. The council further resolved to express its regret at the action of the Counties’ Association in allowing the matter to stand over for the duration of the war and dissociated itself from the action taken.
