A NOBLE WORK

SUFFERING HUMANITY APPEAL FOR MAKOGAI LEPER'S Despite the many calls on the community, ready and generous support will, no doubt, be forthcoming for the latest appeal issued on behalf of the Makogai lepers. The wonderful work of the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary, who have charge of the nursing of the lepers, is beyond praise. They take care of the whole lives of the patients. Apart from the nursing of the sick in the hospital, there are many 'dressings to be done for the able-bodied patients in the villages, daily doses of chaulmoogra oil to be administered, and any complaints to be listened to and settled. Other Sisters have their work in the laboratory, the store, or the nursery, while others again give out the daily rations, teach the children, and give lessons in handcrafts. And always they are ready with sympathy, encouragement and help. Truly, the work of the Good Samaritan, and a work calling for the practical sympathy of all who believe in the Sisters’ motto: ‘‘For suffering humanity; —all creeds, all colours. ’ ’ The most suitable gifts are light materials (new) for women’s and children’s clothes; silks and embroidery cottons; singlets, sand-shoes (new), games, bats, tennis racquets, tobacco, pipes, fishing lines, sweets, soap, children’s books (only in good repair), and a limited number of books on needlework with'or without patterns. No other books are being sent this year. Sunshades or light umbrellas in good repair will also be appreciated. Donations of cash or kind may be forwarded to the secretary-trustee, Mr P. J. Twomey, 172 Bealey Avenue, Christchurch,. who will gratefully acknowledge on behalf of the Sisters.
