FARMERS OBJECT

TYRES FOR CLERGYMEN NONE FOR GUARDSMEN PROTEST AT UNION MEETING Objection to the regulations which allowed clergymen to secure tyres when needed as well -as 10 gallons of petrol each month was voiced at Tuesday’s meeting of the Northern Thames Sub-Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held in Paeroa on Tuesday. Mrs A. H. Blackmore (Waihi), raised the point saying that she had felt very annoyed when she had heard that the traffic inspectors had authority to grant tyres to doctors and clergymen whenever they needed them. She said she appreciated that the doctors should have tyres but she objected to clergymen being treated similarly.

Discussion arose when a remit was being discussed which asked that an assurance be given to farmers who used their cars for Home-'Guard purposes that new tyres or retreads be available when needed.

Several members pointed, out that several trips a month had to be made

by Home Guardsmen to'their centre to get their hours of parade in. The chairman, Mr S. E. Hall, (Matatoki), outlined the seriousness of the situation and gave instances of cars used in important work which had been turned down when they had applied for new tyres. Mrs Blackmore gave an instance of zoning in the Waihi district. 'She stated that all deliveries had 'been cut out which meant that every farmer had to go to town to get his supplies while a baker’s van was passing along a certain road but refused to carry goods. Mr C. G. Jackson .(Paeroa), said that in his opinion all tyres should be re-treaded as they needed it so that plenty of good tyres would .be available when needed. If tyres were just allowed to be worn out and then discarded soon there would be no tyres left in the country.

The motion was then put and carried unanimously.
