POST OFFICE WANTED NEEDED AT MACKAYTOWN WAIHI BOROUGH ELECTION (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of August 5, 1942.) For a considerable time past ■ the residents of Mackaytown have experienced a very great deal of inconvenience through not having a post office in their township. The nearest post and telegraph office is at Karangahake, a distance of about two miles. Considering that Mackaytown has now a population of’ 200 inhabitants we certainly are of the opinion that the residents are entitled to better facilities for the receipt of their correspondence than exist at present.
We learn that a petition signed about about 70 residents, is (being forwarded to the eral, praying that a post office be opened at Mackaytown. Such an establishment is certainly essential and would be a great acquisition to the place. Thus the Waitekauri paper on the recent municipal election: “The large majority secured by Mr Katz in the Waihi Borough election seems to point to a reaction in opposition to the mayoral following. Mr Katz has been returned to vindicate the general desire for a return to sober business in the council as opposed to that fierce spirit of party government which hade fair to gain notoriety for the Waihi Borough iCouncil. Mr Ross should have had. his testimonial for he worked heartily to secure the formation of the borough 2and the council would have done wisely to have recognised that service, ignoring any little soreness on . his part over the appointment of a town clerk. At all events, Mr Katz’s majority of over 300 votes is a very clear indication of public opinion on the matter.”
