does it lie?
WORK OF THE “RETOUCHER” CANNOT BE RELIED UPON “It is said that the camera cannot He, but this is one of the basest lies ever uttered. The camera can be made to do anything.” The above comment was made by a member of the Matamata Jersey Club when photographs of V.H.C. cows reproduced in a paper were handed round for inspection and comparison. Members supported this view and another member emphasised that a “retoucher” could eliminate almost any defect which a beast might have.
Still another member gave an instance of the picture of a bull offered for sale which was in reality the bull’s father. Never Did Justice The president, in facetious- tones, and amid laughter, reminded members that no one had. yet been satisfied with the photo of his best girl or even that of father. Such photographs never did them justice. The previous speaker: Yes, but they cannot shove the photograph of the son in for the father. (Renewed laughter). Another member of wide experience pointed out that if a strong magnifying glass was used the “retoucher’s” work could be spotted, ■even if they had given'an animal a new head. Members agreed that photographs -depended very largely on the photographer and could not always be relied upon, but there was little that could be done in the matter as breeders had to so advertise their «toclc.
