COROMANDEL INSTITUTE RESULTS OF COMPETITIONS The monthly meeting of the Coromandel Women’s Institute was held in the Oddfellows Hall on Wednesday, July 8. The president, Mrs D. Strongman, presided over a good attendance. The meeting opened with the Institute Prayer. It was decided to buy material for the Lady Galway Guild with the money that had been donated for the spinning wheel, that had since been given to the guild. The federation president, in her monthly letter, urged institute members to carry on the normal institute work in spite of the war. Acknowledgement was received from the Blind Institute for the donation of £8 7s. Mrs Anderson w T as nominated representative on the Rehabilitation Committee. The roll call, “Many uses of baking soda,” brought forth many useful and surprising ideas. The motto for the month was “Friendship is ever a sheltering tree.” The president read an interesting extract from the, “Exporter.” Competitions resulted as follows: Plum-raspberry Jam: Miss Barrett, 1; Mrs Deeble and Mrs Evans, dead, heat, 2; Mrs Knight, 4. Plain Gingerbread: Miss Russell, 1; Mrs McKinley, 2; Mrs Inglis, 3. Slice Pumpkin: Mrs Evans, 1; Mrs Knight, 2; Mrs McKee, 3.
Hand-made Handkerchief: Miss Barrett, 1; Mrs Reddy, 2; Mrs Davies, 3.
The meeting was concluded with the National Anthem.
MERCURY BAY MEETING
AN ENJOYABLE AFTERNOON
Mrs Brophy, vice-president, was in the chair at the meeting of the Mercury Bay Women’s Institute at Whitianga on July 9. In her opening address Mrs Brophy informed the meeting of the steady progress made by Mrs Ralph, the president, who hoped to be well enough to attend the next meeting. A quantity of wool from the Patriotic , Committee was distributed to the members for knitting, and the secretary was asked to procure a further supply for the merchant navy.
The roll call, “Mistakes I have made,” was well answered and Miss Lee read the “Pioneer Talks” in place of Mrs Colqhoun, who was unable to attend owing to illness. Mrs Bronlund offered to be the reader at the next meeting.
An amusing competition arranged ■by -Mrs ‘N. Wells, junr.,—making a hat with a sheet of newspaper and a few pins, resulted in a tie between Mrs Brophy and Mrs Armstrong. As there was only one prize, they drew lots and Airs Brophy won. In the vase of flowers competition Mrs Bronlund was first and Miss-Lee proved very entertaining. - second. Best bloom, Mrs Bronlund' (one entry). The flowers were later presented to Mrs Ralph. Afternoon tea was supplied by Mesadmes Brophy, A. Simpson and Mrs Winiata. A vote of thanks to the hostesses and entertainers was proposed by Mrs H. Simpson and seconded by Roy Smith. The meeting closed with the National Anthem.
