FORTY YEARS AGO

PAEROA TOO GOOD RUGBY WITH WAITEKAURI MATCH PLAYED AT PAEROA (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of July 13, 1902.) The Paeroa representatives played their first match on Saturday at Paeroa when they met and defeated Waitekauri iby nine points (three tries), to three ,(one try). .Sorensen was captain of the Paeroa team, and Wright of the visitors. The teams lined out as follows: — Paeroa: Fullback, Vuglar; threequarters, Manning, Flynn, Chamberlain*; five - eighths, Flynn, Chamberlain; five-eighths, Fathers; half, Smith; forwards, McGuire, Johnson (wings), W. Sorensen, Callaghan, Rukataia, Thorburn, ‘Dunlop, Silcoqji and Capill. Waitekauri: Full-back, Hedges; three-quarters, Gordon, Wright, Berryman; half, Cotter; five-eighths,' Cooper; forwards, Kneebone, Johns (wings) l , Brown, Corbett, Johns, Hughes, Bainbridge, Miller and Hunter. It was evident to everybody that the Paeroa players were superior to their opponents and it is difficult to say why they did not register a larger score. There can be no doubt .that the representatives of Waitekauri were no match for those of Paeroa, for they were beaten at every point of the game.

Flynn was undoubtedly the best back on the ground. Fathers and Chamberlain also showed good form, but the latter injured his leg in the second spell and had to retire. Smith was hardly a success, however he stopped: rushes in good style. Manning had a day off and Vuglar had very little to do. McGuire put in a lot of good work on the wing and Sorensen, Dunlop and Silcock were the best of the pack men, the latter being particularly prominent in the open. —- ..t..u.uunnniitiiiiitiiiitHiKii!ntiiiiiiiii!iiiiiiiHnnniiinuiiiiiinHinnnii]
