TRAINING OF BOYS
U.S.A. FARM WORK COURSE HELPING THE WAR EFFORT A scheme which might be applied effectively in New Zealand has been successfully tried out at Omaha, U.S.A.
City youths residing in Omaha and vicinity and interested in helping the war effort of America have been trained to take their places on Nebraska farms for holiday periods. Sponsored by the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, a six-weeks’ course in farm training has been offered Omaha boys from 14 to 18 years of age.
Efficient instructors obtained from Omaha industries such as implement houses, dairies, the Live Stock Exchange, the Federal Land (Bank, and the (Packing House, offered) general instructions in farm machinery, crops, dairying and general farm Work practices. In addition to class work, the boys were given field trips to farms, dairies, implement houses, the packing house, etc. After a fair testing of boys for suitability for the farm work, only the best fitted were. retained in the course.
