HEAVIER FINES

LIQUOR, NEAR DANCE HALLS

MR A. SUTHERLAND’S OPINION

Speaking in the House of Representatives last week, Mr Sutherland, M.'P. for Hauraki, expressed the opinion that the penalties for having alcoholic liquor in or around dance halls should be increased.

Formerly magistrates fined offenders £5 for the offence, but lately many offenders got off with a much lighter fine and the evil was increasing.

The police had done good l work in combating the evil, but heavier fines were necessary.

The Minister in charge, the Hon. iP. C. Webb, said it was a matter foi* the juctice Department.
