9 YEARS’ SERVICE

CHAIRMAN OF PIAKO MR W. Q. KENNEDY’S WORK MARK OF APPRECIATION A decision to have a portrait of Cr. W. C. Kennedy, past chairman of the Piako County Council, hung on the wall of the council chamber with those of other past presidents, was made at the monthly meeting of the council following the ’ motion of Crs J. M. Stewart and W. A. Rushton. The mover, Cr. J. M. Stewart, who had been absent from the last meeting, congratulated Cr. D. Johnson on his appointment to the chair and assured him of his wholehearted support. Cr, Stewart then referred to the great services of Cr. W. C. Kennedy. Cr. Kennedy had been of great assistance to him in his riding (Tahuna), where many upsetting changes had taken place in the recent past, the speaker added. Had Served Well Cr. Kennedy had devoted a great deal of time to county affairs and it was fitting'' that his portrait should be placed amongst those of others who had served with distinction. Pioneer Chairmen

Cr. W. A. Rushton seconded the motion and drew attention to the fact that portraits of two past chairmen of the county’s pioneering period, Messrs C. Manuel (1911-14), and T. Gavin (1905-08) were not on the wall. It was resolved that, if possible, these should* also be obtained. The chairman and Cr. Kennedy thanked Cr. Stewart for his remarks about them, and the motion regarding the portraits was carried.

Portraits of- former chairmen already hanging in the County Chambers are those of the late Messrs l W. IP. Chepmell (1887-1905, 1909-1911, and March 1914 to November 1914), J. B. Thomas (1914-20), F. W. Walters (1920-26), and W. R. Lowry (1926-33). Mr Lowry is still living in Morrinsville. Cr. Kennedy was elected chairman in 1933.
