SAVING THE TREES

COUNTY COUNCIL INTERESTED COROMANDEL SCENIC KAURIS At the monthly meeting of the Coromandel County Council a letter was read from Mr Campbell, 'State Forest Service, Auckland, expressing appreciation of the concern expressed by the council regarding the denudation of forests by logging operations and fires.

The letter stated that a portion of the forest mentioned by the council, was an old milling area, and that the trees being cut were odd ones left by the mills. The council was assured that a strict vigilance was being Irept in these districts by the department. The efforts of the council in making effective the slogan “Prevent Forest Fires,” were highly esteemed as a valuable lead to the people of the district.

After a short discussion, which was energetic and emphatic, it was proposed by Cr. T. E. Simpson and seconded by Cr. A. Watkin “That this council moves that a letter 'be written to the Conservator of Forests asking whether negotiations have been gone into with regard to the scenic reserve of kauri timber on the Mercury Bay road which it is suggested has been measured up for cutting.”—Carried unanimously.
