HARD-UP DANCE

GAY THRONG AT COROMANDEL FIRE BRIGADE FUNCTION St. George’s Hall, Coromandel, was the scene of a gay throng on Friday night, June 5, when the Coromandel Volunteer Fire Brigade held a hardup and fancy dress dance. The hall was tastefully decorated which helped: to make 'the scene gayer than usual. A very good, attendance was registered. Although the number in hardup fancy costumes was small, they made up for lack of numbers in variety and fun.

Visitors were present from Mercury Bay and also seven members of the Thames Fire Brigade. The latter judged the costumes as they took part in the x Grand March. Popular music was played by Mrs E. M. Lucas., piano, and Master Lee Perfect, drums, while Mrs D. Stewart played; extras. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Pat Hart and Mr Ivan McCall. The prizes for the best hard-up costumes were won by Mi’ and Mrs D. Strongman. The best fancy dress prizes went to Mrs D. Stewart '(pierette)’, and Mr E. Lowe (Chinese). Two special prizes were donated l by the Thames visitors and went to Mrs Compton in a gypsy costume and a young lady dressed in a Hungarian costume.

. During the evening Mr W. Hart, secretary of the Coromandel Fire Brigade, thanked the' ladies who had decorated the hall and baked and looked after the supper, all of which had gone so far towards making the evening such a big success. He also said a hearty vote of thanks was, due to .Mrs Lucas and her son for supplying the music for the evening free of charge and: which was most appreciated by all.

Messrs W. and T. Hart acted as M’s.'C.

“Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem brought the function to a close in the early hours of the morning.
