SCOTTISH AFTERNOON

VERY SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION

SOME £l6 FOR PATRIOTIC FUND

The Scottish afternoon in Paeroa arranged ‘by Mrs D. Murdoch and Mrs R. J. Wilson for Friday afternoon, was a happy and thoroughly satisfactory one. The Civic Hall was comfortably filled and patriotic funds will benefit to the extent of over £l6 as a result of an energetic committee’s activities.

'Business was brisk at the'bring and buy stall under the charge of Mrs J. Beveridge and Miss C. Pitkeithly. Competitions were won by Miss J. Scanlan, Mrs J. Kidd and Mrs J. Marshall.

Ehtries in the cooking section were judged by Mrs J. Reid, of Netherton, prizes being awarded as follows: — ;Sponge sandwich with butter. — Miss C. .Pitkeithly, 1. Sponge without butter’. —Mrs J. Mitchell 1, Miss C. Pitkeithly 2. Coloured Scotch thistles and purple victory V’s constituted the decorative theme.

The wholly enjoyable programme which opened with the National Anthem and the 'Scotch national song, had been arranged by Mrs Murdoch with the assistance of Mrs J. Stevenson, and every item unquestionably merited the consistent demand for encores. ,

The items were.:—'Bagpipe selections, Master Alan Stevenson; vocal solo, “Jessie’s .Dream,” Miss 'E. Scott (Morrinsville), encore “My Luv Is Like a Red Red Rose”; sword dance in costume, Miss J. Mclnnis (Morrinsville); pianoforte solo, “The Battle Of The .’Nations,” Mrs (Brown; vocal solo, “The Road To The Isles,” Mrs J. W. Jones (Waikino), encore, “Angus McDonald”; vocal duet, “Will Ye No’ Come Back Again?” (by request)! Mrs W. Aston and Mrs J. Stevenson, encore “Annie Laurie”; Highland fling, Pamela Gleadow, Valerie Saunders and Margaret Young.

The accompaniments were ably played by Mrs Jones, Mrs J. L. Brown and Miss Scott. Mrs Murdock thanked the artists, some of Whom had travelled quite a distance, for giving such a first-class treat. She also expressed pleasure and appreciation for the splendid support afforded the function. The committee responsible for the outstanding social success of the afternoon who must be congratulated bn their efforts are Mesdames D. Murdoch, R.- J. Wilson, J. Beveridge, N. Alexander, R. Gibson and Miss G. Pitkeithly. Mrs G. Bennett rendered her usual yeoman service.
