In our issue of Monday last the name of Mrs E. Edwards was omitted from the newly-elected/ committee of the Paeroa Plunket Society.

Employment of Staff A recent amendment of the National Service Emergency Regulations makes it an offence for any employer to employ a worker whose last engagement was in an essential undertaking and who left that engagement without consent. This regulation was operative from May 21, 1942.

Thames Hospital Board The monthly meeting of the Thames Hospital Board was held in Thames on Tuesday, Mr W. Danby presiding in the absence of the chairman, Mr P. E/Brenan. Others present were Messrs W. C. Kennedy, A. G. Davis, C. W. Parfitt, A. H. Sutton, M. A. Ellis, C. W. Winder, !S. H. Brown, W. Madgwick, Lieut. M. Brook and the secretary, Mr A. L. Neighbour. Leave of absence was extended to Messrs P. E. Brenan and J. G. Cornes.

United Nations Flag Day His Worship the Mayor has received a telegram from the Right Hon. the Prime Minister requesting that the United Nations Flag Day which is to he held next Saturday . should he observed in Paeroa. Appropriate flags are to be flown on public buildings. His Worship invites citizens generally to fly flags. Mangaiti Rainfall The total rainfall at Mangaiti during last month was 3.61 inches, compared with 1.08 inches for May, 1041. The average rainfall for May, over a period of 25 years was 3.83 inches, the highest fall being in 1924 (8.27 inches) and the lowest in 1936 (1.02 inches). The total rainfall for the year to date is 11.23 inches, compared with 16.32 inches for a similar period last year. Court Attire It is not often that counsel appear in thp Supreme Court without wig . and gown, but recently in the Supreme Court, Hamilton, in a divorce action, Captain A. L. Tompkins appeared wearing his military uniform. Thus he did not have to wear* the custom- ' ary wig and gown, for military regulations forbid the uniform being cred with any other dress.
