THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY. “Public Service.” WEDNESDAY, JUNE 3, 1942. A ROYAL TRIBUTE

As Monday was regarded in all but essential industries as a statutory holiday it is appropriate that some attention be directed to its origin. ’ It is usual to refer to it broadly as the King’s Birthday but in actual fact this is not correct, for the ruling Monarch’s birthday occurs in December. The observance of June 1, as the royal anniversary is due to a graceful tribute of our present King to perpetuate the memory of his beloved father whose birthday fell as thousands recall it, on June 3. At George the Sixth’s personal request the nation has observed his father’s birthday instead of his own since his accession. The modification today is that the nearest Monday to June 3 is regarded as the royal birthday in order to facilitate, the long week-end and to save breaking into the working week. FOR DOMESTIC USE It looks as if the supply of electricity for domestic purposes may become a serious problem unless, as has been suggested, means can be found of spreading the peak pressure. Among remedies suggested are the earlier commencement of industries, shortening of the lunch hour and the “staggering” of the closing times of industries. Apparently the shortage of current is not in the bulk over-all consumption, but in the extraordinary demand at particular times, which is all the ..more reason why something should be done to relieve the strain on the power-supply stations at these periods.
