POPULAR GIRL
Patriotic competition
OPINION ON THE PLAINS
COMMITTEES TO BE CONSULTED
Members of the Hauraki Plains County Council who are the controlling authority of the Hauraki Plains patriotic affairs, at the monthly meeting of the council did not favour a suggestion that a Popular Girl Contest be held in Zone M in which area the Hauraki Plains is included. The chairman, however, undertook to contact the sub-committees which act in the various districts on the Plains regarding the question and iif they (favoured the idea to join in the contest. Mr Liddington, of Thames, representing the Zone H Patriotic Committee, waited on the council, explaining that it was proposed to hold a Popular 'Girl Contest over the whole area which included the Hauraki Plains county, the Thames county, the Thames borough and the Coromandel county. Zone H had. to find some £7926 for the 1942 All Purposes Appeal allocated as follows: —Hauraki Plains’£2642,'Thames borough £2642, Thames' county £1321 and Coromandel county £1321. A total of £l6OO had already been subsidised, leaving approximately £6ooo’ to be found before September 30.
Mr Liddington suggested that the money he raised in a zone appeal instead of a separate district effort. All the other bodies had agreed to a Popular Girl Contest anH he asked the
Hauraki Plains County to join in also. The idea was that the Thames borough and the Hauraki Plains each have two candidates while the Thames and Coromandel counties have a candidate each.
Mr W. E. Hale opposed the idea, contending that if the county was split into two areas with only two committees operating those on the present committees would welcome the opportunity of getting off their present committees which would disappear.
Mr Liddington suggested that the present district committees operate in the Popular Girl Contest.
Several members contended that more money could be raised under the present quota scheme and they did not think a Popular Girl Contest would take on on the Hauraki Plains.
The chairman, Mr C. W. Parfitt, advised Mr Liddington that the council could not decide on the question without consulting the committees in the various districts. He undertook to place the question before them and advise their decision.
