SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL VOLUNTEERS ENTERTAIN LETTING COUNTY CONTRACTS (From the Ohinemuri Gazette of May 29, 1902.) The social held last evening under the auspices of the local Volunteers, again proved a most successful and enjoyable one. The theatre was nicely arrayed with flags, and the floor was excellent. The music rendered hy Miss Medhurst (piano), Mr Mettam (cornet)i, Mr R. IBeeche (violin), was all that could be wished for. The energetic secretary, Mr J. W. Silcock, who also acted as M.C., proved himself capable of the duties entrusted to him. Miss Barrett played the supper extras, which were much appreciated. Dancing was kept up merrily until 2 o’clock when a really enjoyable evening was brought to a close. In regard to the showing of works to intending contractors, Councillor Stackpole complained at the meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council yesterday that Contract No. 845, for a bridge at Doherty’s Creek had not been shown to intending contractors. He said that there were men who wanted work and would have tendered for the work if it had been, shown. He further stated that there was a motion on the books that fourteen days’ notice be given of the letting of contracts and he moved that in future the engineer name hour and day when works will be shown. This was seconded by the chairman -(Mr Poland). Councillor Draffin agreed that it was only fair to contractors that the works should ■be shown on the ground; it was usual to show .the work, but through a mistake this particular work had not -been shown. Councillor Stackpole’s motion was then carried unanimously.
