MISSIONARY UNION

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN MEET VISIT FROM THAMES BRANCH Members of the Thames' branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union were guests of the Paeroa branch at their monthly meeting on Tuesday afternoon in St. Andrew’s Church, Paeroa.

The president, Mrs E. V. Slyfield, warmly welcomed the visitors and expressed the hope that other opportunities for exchanging visits would be possible.

After the ordinary business of the meeting, Mrs Slyfield gave a most interesting resume of pioneering mission work in the New Hebrides. Workers have recently been evacuated from these islands. Details of extremely trying conditions and the loneliness for the missioner’s wife, were related. Furloughs were at first only once in IO years' and any contact with the mainland even mails, at very long intervals. A season of prayer for war-torn countries was extended to include all missionaries and' peoples affected by the tyrannic powers and desires of the Axis.

Miss C. Keller presided at the organ.

Mrs McKinney returned thanks from the Thames ladies for a very pleasant afternoon. A delicious tea was served by the Paeroa members after which a social hour was thoroughly enjoyed.
