THE POPPY FUND
(To the Editor.) Sir, —As Friday next, April 17, has been ’set aside as “Poppy Day,” I would again, as last year, ask the people of Paeroa and the surrounding ’ district through these columns, to assist the Poppy Day effort to their fullest extent. The money derived from the sale of these emblems, after paying the manufacturers, is set aside solely for the benefit of sick returned men and their dependents. This means men of the 2nd. N.Z.E.F. as well as the men from the Great War.
This association has set aside a small sum derived from other sources for ordinary relief, such as, helping a poor man along the road, but the Poppy Fund is sacredly reserved for assistance to the sick. As a stream of men from overseas is now steadily trickling homewards, we anticipate a drain on our fund this winter, and the executive committee of the Paeroa-Hauraki Returned Soldiers’ Association asks its friends to put aside one shilling to “buy a poppy” next Friday. I am, etc., J. M. CRAIG, Hon. Secretary.
