DRIVE FOR ROSE HIPS

WORK BY COROMANDEL SCHOOL

SOLVING ORANGE SHORTAGE

Because of the shortage of oranges —a valuable source of Vitamin C—an interesting scheme is being carried out by Dr. Birkinshaw in Coromandel whereby Mr C. H. McKenzie, headmaster of the Coromandel School is instituting a drive for rose hips. The school children will deposit their treasure kits, of Vitamin C filled rose hips at the hospital this weekend ,where it will be made up into rose hip jelly. It will then be distributed to all those families who are unable to obtain oranges or who are otherwise suffering from a deficiency of the elusive vitamin.

An interesting point in this scheme is that the jelly when made is somewhat temperamental. Over-boiling destroys over 50% of the Vitamin C, whereas under-boiling results in an ultimate fermentation of the jelly, with popping corks and other results reminiscent of the old days of home brew.

A shortage of jam jars is likely to ■be apparent but this may be overcome by the. valiant efforts of the W.W.S.A. and other women’s organisations.
