ACCIDENT ON RAILWAY
INQUEST FORMALLY OPENED
MAORI STRUCK BY TRAIN An inquest concerning the death of Peter Taylor, of Paeroa, a Maori, 50 years of age, who was struck by a train at Te Moananui Flat, near Paeroa, last Saturday night, and who died in the Waihi hospital on Monday evening, was opened before the coroner, Mr W. M. Wallnutt, on Tuesday morning. Sergeant A. Bisset represented the police. Evidence of identification was given by Mrs Sally Harietta Robinson, of Hikuwai, a sister of the deceased. Witness said that her brother was a married man, a farmer by occupation, who lived with his wife at Te Moananui Flat, Paeroa. She last saw him alive in the Waihi hospital on Monday, where he had been taken suffering from severe injuries received in a railway accident at Te Moananui Flat. Although his eyesight was good, said witness, he was very hard of hearing. The portion of the railway where he was injured was right opposite his own home. She did not witness the accident, but saw deceased lying in the guard’s van, though at that time she was not aware it was her brother.
On the application of Sergeant Bissett, the inquest was adjourned sine die.
